Add online requirement (at all times) to that and SimCity 5 joins a growing trend among PC titles. Too bad for those sitting on crappy connections, or those unfortunate who don’t even have one. No SimCity 5 for you as it seems.

All this according to Lead designer Stone Librande, through JoyStiq:

Lead designer Stone Librande confirmed that SimCity would be an internet-dependent experience. Players will need to be online on Origin while playing, even if that wasn’t the point of purchase. The always-on connection becomes necessary with the game’s emphasis on multiplayer and regional impact, and the use of a global economy that all players can influence.

MAXIS: People want to play SimCity solo. NOT multiplayer. And people don’t want to need an internet connection every time they start the game like they are a prisoner with a house arrest ankle bracelet. Have us connect one time to validate / register our game, and let us play on our own terms

Global economy?.. seriously? I want to build cities, not trade stocks or widgets.

If they don’t switch gears and figure out what their customers WANT, and they just force this issue, I will just pirate a cracked version that has what I want: Offline and SOLO.

I agree with JT. Those of us independently impoverished country-dwellers who are off the grid mostly and have antiquated equipment should not be excluded. I’ve been a fan of the Sim City franchise from the get go and this is the first one I’ll probably never be able to play. Not only is the game itself expensive at friggin’ $80 bucks, but then I’d have to get a new computer to play it, $500 bucks-ish, and then get a mobile 4G aircard $150 bucks, then hope that I can get decent/any service out where I live, and pay $50 or more bucks a month for the service, so that “Big Brother” can keep tabs on my gameplay and waste my precious little bandwidth…it’s ridiculous!!! If I were going to pay for all that crap, I’d have to get a 2nd job and not have any time for game playing. Boo-hoo! 🙁 I’m gonna go play Sim City 4 for another 10 years!
